Roman Gladiator contests are a popular theme for slots. This game goes one better, being based on the blockbuster movie of the same name. The slot was released in 2008, and was ahead of it’s time with 2 separate bonus rounds as well as a double-up feature. While it has lagged behind some of the more recent video slot titles, this is still a very playable game and holds up well enough to stay on my play list.
Here is what you will find in this Gladiator slot review: first the setup of the game and the basics like wins and bet sizes are covered. After that the 2 bonus rounds are described, along with the double-up feature. Device compatibility comes next, and then my summary and final thoughts on how this slot matches up with the competition.
Gladiator Slot Review Basics
This is a 5 reel, 3 row slot with up to 25 win lines. The overall feel is bold, blocky and solid – rather than playing on the ancient Roman design theme too much. The big gold playing card symbols are joined by cartoonified portraits of characters from the film.
One thing I would certainly change about this game is the sound effect for wins. Which is more like what you might expect from a 1980’s arcade games console than a recent slot. That aside, the game is very easy to play, and the wins have animations to help with the overall atmosphere.
There are 3 components of your total spin amount – meaning that you’ll need to be careful before you hit the spin button for the first time. These are the coin size, number of lines and then an additional ‘Spins’ component, which is a multiplier. Assuming max lines, you can spin from 25c through to an incredible $1250.
The gladiator mask is the wild symbol in this game, and counts as any symbol except for the scatter. It also starts the Gladiator bonus round if you hit 3+. The scatter is the Coliseum, you get paid for just 2, though need 3 to start the Coliseum bonus round.
Payouts top out with Caesar, you can win 5000 coins for 5. There are plenty of mid-sized wins based on the different characters, and some smaller ones (playing card symbols) which will keep you ticking over between the features.
Gladiator Features and Bonuses
Both the Gladiator and Coliseum bonuses are pick-em rounds – and both can result in reasonable wins, without involving huge progressives.
You’ll get the Coliseum bonus with 3 scatters, and pick a tile from each of 4 rows to configure your free spins. First is the number of spins, then the multiplier, extra scatters come next and then some extra wild symbols. You can win extra picks as you go too. Once you start the free spins, Caesar in reel 3 will add 3 more spins with your current configuration.
The Gladiator bonus is another pick-em game, this time you choose helmets, and accumulate the prizes associated with each. This is a simple game, though the big money potential should keep you interested.
When you win you can choose black or red to double up, this has a max of $1000 – and is a straight 50 / 50 chance. Great for adding a little interest to those smaller wins.
Device Compatibility of PlayTech’s Gladiator Slot
PlayTech are ahead of the game when it comes to making their slots available on multiple devices. Windows and Mac users will find a downloadable client, though this is no longer really needed – as the games all work in your browser window these days. Using responsive design and HTML5 technology, you’ll be able to access Gladiator no problem on Android, Apple and Windows tablets. This is not one of the select number of games which has made it onto the native iPhone or Android apps - there are newer titles still waiting to be moved over.
Gladiator Slot – My Summary
This is a solid slot, which manages to be atmospheric without being over the top. It does feel a little too simple in some ways, with the blocky graphics an area for improvement. The bonus rounds are very good, and happen frequently enough to keep you interested in the play. If PlayTech would ditch that 'winning' sound effect, I think I’d be playing this game a lot more often.
There are plenty of excellent games in the PlayTech range, my go-to for them is BGO casino. You'll get 10 no-deposit free spins (and can keep what you win without play-through) to check out the games. See www.bgo.com for details!
