Gamblers have tried to get the better of roulette ever since the game was introduced in 18th century France, in the hope of finding some magic system that would eliminate the house edge and give them untold riches. It would be fair to say that the early days of the game actually allowed some shrewd gamblers succeed, but this was due to the wheels not being as random as they should be, meaning certain numbers would come up more than they should. However, when playing on a completely random wheel, the house edge will always succeed in the long run.
This doesn’t mean that systems don’t have their place in roulette. Firstly, they offer an organized way of playing, meaning that you head to the table with a set plan. Having put this in place, you’ll not find yourself chasing losses or placing random oversized bets. Secondly, the majority of systems will actually offer a probability that you’ll win in the short term – although you should always be wary that potentially big losses could arise. Finally, trying out a system at roulette is fun.
If wanting to try a system, I would suggest playing at one of the free games first, to gain a feel for the system. You should also practice the system a good number of times, so you’ll see exactly what the downsides can be – the more times you practice the better. There are many free roulette games online – you’ll find some by simply using a search engine, while a good number of online casinos will offer practice play alongside the cash games.

Here are three systems which I have found the most enjoyable:
Labouchere Betting System
This system requires you to decide how much you’d like to win before you start. You’ll then break up this amount into a line of numbers that add up to the amount. For example, if wanting to win £10, you could have a line as such (how you set up the line is up to you, many use all 1’s):
1 1 2 1 2 1 2
You’ll then place a bet on an even money shot at the roulette wheel (usually red/black) which adds up to the sum of the numbers at either end of the line. In this example your bet would be £3.
If the bet wins, you’ll eliminate both of the numbers at either end, so your new line will look like this:
1 2 1 2 1
If the bet loses, you add the size of the losing bet to the right hand side of the line. So your new line would look like this:
1 1 2 1 2 1 2 3
You’ll repeat the same process over and over until the line has disappeared.
Essentially, every time your bet wins the line will reduce by two numbers and every time your bet loses the line will only increase by one. This means that in a perfect world the line will always reduce to nothing, and when this is achieved you’ll have won the amount you have aimed for. The downside to this system is that a losing run can mean that you’ll be placing some very large stakes at the table.
Oscars Grind Betting System
This is particularly simple betting plan where your aim is to win just one unit and having done this the plan has been successful.
The plan has 3 simple rules:
If a bet loses the next bet will be of the same size as the previous one.
When a bet wins, your next bet will be one unit bigger than the previous one.
When you have reached the point where you have an overall profit of one unit, you stop.
Here is an example of Oscars Grind in action:
Size of Bet
+£1 – Stop!
You’ll notice in the above example that the final bet is £2, when you would expect the bet size to increase to £4 after a win. However, when using this system, you never have to bet more than you’ll need to gain the overall profit of £1 which was your initial aim.
Like the Labouchere system, this system is likely to work on the majority of occasions, but when it does go badly, you can once again find yourself in a big hole. This system works particularly well if you have a streaky run at the table, with a series of successive wins or losses. Alternate wins and losses however will not do you any great favours – a run like this never seeing you achieve your aim.
The Martingale System
This is perhaps the most famous system of all. Like the Oscars Grind system, your aim is to win just a single unit. You’ll place your initial bet on that even money shot, and if it wins, great! You’ve achieved your aim and the system has worked. If you lose that first bet, you’ll double your stake – if this bet now wins, you’ll have won that single unit. You’ll keep doubling your bet until you eventually win, and whatever stage you finally win at, you’ll win that single unit.
The advantage of this system is that you’ll only ever need just one win for the system to work. The disadvantage is that you might be facing some very large bets, especially if you do have a run of 5, 6 or 7 losing spins. In fact because the stakes double each time, you might not be able to afford the next bet, or your bet size might surpass the table limit. In this regard, this is the most dangerous of the three systems.
Roulette Systems Overview
All of the systems above work on the premise of making a set amount of money before you start, and all could potentially cost a lot of money in achieving that aim. As such, if trying out any of these systems I would put a stop loss in place, where you’ll walk away without losing more than you can actually afford to. On a brighter note, these systems can offer some short term success, so a profit is entirely feasible – however if trying these systems out an infinite number of times, they will make an overall loss.
A far better way to enjoy roulette is to play within your bankroll, take advantage of free roulette spins and casino bonus offers - and enjoy the game and the short-term windfalls it can bring.
