Overview of the Best of MicroGaming’s Huge Range of Online Slots
Credited with the first real money casino games, the really impressive thing about MicroGaming is that they are still leading the casino software industry more than 20 years later!
MicroGaming has the largest range of slots of any software house, with more than 450 titles in total. Many of these are now out of date. Even allowing for this I would estimate 250 or more which are still worth playing. Many of the latest titles are at the cutting edge of design, have the latest tech (243 ways for example) and include break out bonus feature games too.
Of course, no MicroGaming overview would be complete without mentioning their huge progressive jackpot games. The infamous ‘Mega Moolah’ and ‘Major Millions’ continue to make players into millionaires.
These games are not licensed to US friendly online casinos – if you are from the US then this guide covers the slots software options available to you.
I have divided the sections below, first looking at the flagship slots, which includes my ‘3 to play’ from the MicroGaming slots range. After that some of the other video slots which are worth a look are covered, followed by the extensive 3-reel / traditional range.
The Best MicroGaming Slots
What MicroGaming do well is figure out a winning formula, and then stick with it. There are two examples of exactly this with their best non-progressive (though still big win) slot – ThunderStruck 2. This is based on the Roman Gods, and is the second version of a hugely popular game. Not only did MicroGaming score a big win with the update, they use the same setup for many of their other flagship slots – for example the recent big hit Immortal Romance.
There are a lot of movie and TV tie-ins within the range of games. These include the fresh new Jurassic Part (a must-play from this range), Terminator 2 and The Dark Knight Rises. You’ll find a lot of progressive jackpots available. MicroGaming have a huge reach in terms of the number of casinos and the size of the brands which license their games – making them ideal for growing these big pools. Mega Moolah is their most popular Jackpot slot, this regularly pays out in the $2 to $5 million range. Other big name slots include the Battlestar Galactica tie-ins and the latest comic book title ‘Hell Boy’.
Here are 3 titles which I recommend you check out on your first visit to a MicroGaming Casino:
#1 Mega Moolah: Maybe this choice is a little clichéd… then again, this is one of those titles that every slots fan should play at least once. It has a distinctive orange colour with wild animal symbols. There is nothing particularly remarkable about the game-play itself, though there are enough smaller wins to keep you going. The bonus round, with 4 levels of jackpots is where you want to get to. This has the potential to pay out multi-million wins (the biggest so far was just under $5 million), via a spinning wheel-of-fortune type game. Make sure you play this game at least once!
#2 Thunderstruck 2: This game was one of the first to introduce the 243 ways system, which does away with traditional win lines, and instead makes every combination starting on the left a possible win. The theme is Roman mythology, and the slot is very fast and smooth. Where you really want to get is the ‘Great Hall of Spins’, where you get awarded different free spins rounds with various multipliers and wilds (each based on a god). There is also a ‘Wildstorm’ expanding wilds feature which will result in some big wins. Have to say it, this is yet another ‘must see’ title. Read my detailed ThunderStruck 2 Review here.
#3 Immortal Romance: This one works like a version of ThunderStruck 2 based on the vampire series genre. This feels more modern, with better graphics, and instead of gods, the free spins rounds are based on the vampire characters. It was a close call as to whether to put the dinosaur-filled Jurassic Park in this spot, or for that matter the excellent Terminator 2!
With the biggest range of slots out there, you’ll probably find your own MicroGaming favourites.
Regular 5 Reel Video Slots and Traditional Slot Games at MicroGaming
Some of the old 5 reel games are a little on the dated side already. These tend to be the 9 or 20 line games, with only free-spin features and wild symbols. They still compare well with similar titles elsewhere, it is just that the latest games are so much better.
Many casinos have cut the choice for you, taking only 150 or so of the slots. Games which fall outside of the flagship titles, though are still worth playing are Irish Eyes, Cash Splash, Reel Gems and Tomb Raider 2.
There are plenty of old school 3 reels. If you like these games then ‘Major Millions’ is a good bet, as this one has a multi-million progressive jackpot. You’ll also find some UK Fruit machine style games, video poker and novelty game-show type games (I mentally associate those with Bingo, though they are not a million miles away from slots).
Device Compatibility of MicroGaming Slots
MicroGaming got a lead on many of the other software houses, by making their games multi-device compatible several years ago. Their mobile / browser platform is known as ‘Viper’ and works using Flash and HTML5. This will work with both Android and Apple tablets / iPads and in your browser on all sorts of computers too. Phone screens are too small for some of the games, though many have been adapted. Some casinos offer native (downloadable) apps in addition to the responsive games. Where you do find these the choice of games is limited to between 20 and around 35.
32Red (my personal favorite MicroGaming casino) has gone down the responsive route, and gives you access to more than 150 titles in this way.
Pros and Cons of MicroGaming Casinos
There are a lot of positives when it comes to MicroGaming. This makes sense, you do not remain industry leader for 20 years without keeping up with the times. The main positive is the huge choice of top quality games. New titles come out every month, and the quality improves each time. I can not remember ever not being able to find a game that I like the look of from the MicroGaming list. Multi-device compatibility and the fact that only the biggest and best brands get licensed with these games are two more advantages.
The only real negative I can think of is that you might end up wasting some time going through the 100’s of legacy games at some casinos. Though you never know – you can unearth some real gems among them sometimes!
I use 32Red for MicroGaming titles. This big brand casino and bookmaker are UK licensed, and offer games via mobile or desktop devices. They have a great reputation for service and pay out fast too. You’ll get £32 in bonus cash for every £20 that you deposit (in $, £ or €). Check out Mega Moolah, ThunderStruck 2 and 150+ more MicroGaming Titles for yourself now at www.32red.com
