Review of the Online Slots Range from Rival Gaming
You’ll find these games at a lot of casinos, though they are generally the smaller and lesser known outfits. This makes it important to do your background checks (which are simple enough) before you jump in and play.
The flagship games from Rival Gaming are known as the ‘iSlots’. These promise an expanding interactive story line. There are some entertaining titles in this range. There are also standard video slot games, 3 reel slots (including progressives), video poker and some novelty type games too. Rival also cover table games – though here I have kept the focus on the slots.
iSlots from Rival Gaming
You’ll find some great titles (the two cosmic quests, 3 ‘as reels turn’ games and the Back 9 are all must-sees), though the big hype about ‘progressive storylines’ can be a little overdone. Expect 5 reel slots with between 20 and 30 pay lines. Expanding wilds and other in-reel behavior is common, along with break out bonus games with various levels of interaction. The ‘progressive’ nature of these bonuses means that the longer you play the more rounds you will hit – which keeps the games fresh and new.
Here are some examples of iSlots, and how the bonuses work:
Cosmic Quest 1: This is my favorite of the 2 titles in this range, the cartoony space theme keeps the smaller wins coming in, and the two bonus rounds can get you the bigger payouts. There is a free spins round where the rocket becomes an expanding wild to cover entire reels. There is also a ‘space game’ where you have to shoot asteroids for bigger prizes. If you have not tried the iSlots before, this one makes an excellent introduction.
As The Reels Turn: I have to hand it to Rival Gaming, there are some smart creative minds behind this software house… This game (or the series of them) can be thought of as a cross between a soap opera and a slot. Action is centred on the El Paradiso club, and you get to see different scenes in the developing storyline as you play (and win money). There are 3 separate games which move the story along, and all have unique bonus games as well as free-spins. These slots are innovative, quirky and colorful all at the same time.
Here are my reviews of the first 3 installments:
The Back 9: This is a golf based slot, and is the sequel to the ‘Hole in Won’ game which was also themed on golf. As well as the main game play, which includes expanding wilds, scatters and other in-reel features, you get to play nine mini-holes of golf. These progressive bonus games keep things fresh, and hopefully keep your bankroll nicely topped up too.

Video Slots from Rival Gaming
With more than 100 slot games in total and new additions every couple of months, there is a great choice of games at Rival Gaming casinos. The video slots have break-out bonus games, free spin rounds and all the usual features you would expect from modern slots. The big difference between these games and the iSlots is that the bonus rounds are fixed and not in a sequence – not a huge difference for most of us!
Some of the titles are blocky and simple, others are more colorful with animated reels and more going on. Titles I have enjoyed include Scary Rich 2, Love and Money and Best of Luck. If you are of a certain age, you might enjoy the retro humor in ‘So 80’s’ too.
3 Reel Slots from Rival Gaming
This is an overlooked area, the 3 reel slots from rival are not the ‘traditional’ slots you get from other slots software houses. These games are themed, colorful and often humorous too. There is the chicken themed ‘Eggstravaganza’, a soccer based game, Chicken Little (what is it with these chickens!), and a mythological game called Heroes realm. These games are great for those times when you’d like to get away from the interactive iSlots type games, and just relax with some 3-reel action instead.
Video Poker Games from Rival Gaming
There are 7 titles, which cover the most popular variations. You’ll find Aces and Faces, Deuces Wild, Jacks or Better and Joker Poker – plus a few minor variations. These are smart and smooth to play, though you will not find any major variations like multi-hand games or progressives among them.
Rival Gaming Slots – Pros and Cons
I am surprised that these games have not been picked up by bigger brand casinos. At the moment they seem to power 100’s of smaller outfits instead. When you see the professionalism of the games and how well they compare to Real Time Gaming titles – you’ll wonder too.
The main positive is the choice and the game-play. Both the iSlots and the Video Slots ranges are very good. If you have not tried them before there are more than 100 fresh titles waiting for you to check them out. You can play these games using Flash in-browser technology, or via a download.
Negatives for me are the lack of progressive jackpots, only Strike Gold has one at the moment – and this is not linked, making it small – particularly for international players used to the PlayTech or NetEnt pooled jackpots.
All-in all, I am surprised that Rival are not higher profile than they are.
Who knows, maybe they are about to break through with some big brand partnerships.
