2018 is nearing an end and gamblers all around the world will be looking to start afresh in 2019 and have a successful, winning year. There are many ways you can look to improve your gambling next year, and here are five New Year’s Resolutions you could use to cut out some of the most common mistakes in gambling.

I won’t place a bet after drinking alcohol

The chances are that you’re starting this resolution directly after one of the biggest party nights of the year, so once that alcohol is out of your system, you can start your betting year! Alcohol impairs judgment, and judgment is the key quality you need when deciding whether to place a bet or not. This is actually a pretty easy resolution to keep, although it does require some forward thinking. If going out for a night, consider where you’re going and whether you’ll be tempted to place a bet. If going to a bar where a game is going to be on the screens for example, then you might well be tempted, and if this is the case, try and make your bets (if any) before you go out. If you are the type who habitually bets when out for a night, consider removing that sportsbook App from your phone. Obviously this doesn’t just apply to going out, as you might be sitting at home with a beer watching the game. If this is the case, turn off your laptop before you pour that first glass.

I will not bet Blind

“I can’t believe they just lost, I’ve never even heard of the other team!” Have you ever said this after a losing bet? When placing a bet you want to have all the information to hand and that means knowing as much as you can about all aspects of a bet. Knowing all about one team/player/competitor but nothing about their rivals is a huge mistake in gambling. It’s even worse if you know nothing about a game at all – just betting on a game for the sake of it (maybe because it is on TV?).  Before placing a bet gather as much information together as you can, and only then can you make an informed decision.

I will not be Results Orientated

In gambling it’s very easy to get in the mindset that every winning bet is a good one and every losing bet is a bad one. This is simply not the case. There’ll be many occasions when the opposite applies – some of your best bets will indeed be losing ones, and though you probably wouldn’t admit it, some of your wins will be on bets you should never have placed. Try and look objectively at a bet after the event, to see if the bet truly was value (win or lose). In this day and age there are multitudes of statistics you’ll be able to find on many sporting events, so you can use these to help you evaluate. This will aid all of your future betting.

I will Specialize on Certain Sports

Magnifying GlassIn gambling you get nothing for being a ‘Jack of all trades, and master of none’, as being OK at certain sports will not give you an edge over the very knowledgeable sportsbooks. However, if specializing on a particular sport, you can indeed grab that edge. This edge can be gained because the gambling sites have to cover a great amount of betting events and you may be able to devote more time to studying your particular area of expertise than the sportsbooks can. This is especially the case on some of the smaller, niche markets. Good examples of these markets might include lower league soccer, challenger tour tennis or some of the less popular sports. The more work you can put in studying these sports, the more of an edge you’ll be able to make.

I will be Adaptable in my betting when I need to be

There’ll be many times when you decide upon a bet where you’ll be completely steadfast in your decision, and this is a normally a good place to be, as you’ll be completely confident. However, there will be times when that steadfastness can be a problem, especially if you come across information that could or even should change your mind. For example, you have analyzed a horse race and everything points to the fact that a certain horse offers a great value bet. One of the reasons you think it’s a great value bet is because the trainer has been on a great run. However, that day the trainer has three runners in earlier races, who all under-perform badly. Having put so much stock in the form of the trainer, this fact should make you think again – maybe you should back the horse for a more modest amount, not back it at all, or even back another horse completely. Being steadfast and backing the horse anyway here will do you no favors. Being adaptable and keeping on top of changing situations will only be a good thing for your bankroll.
