Formula 1 Betting Guide - The Complete Guide to Betting on F1

The Formula One season starts in March in Australia, and runs all the way to November when the season finishes in Brazil, and along the way, there are many ways to invest your money – and in the following article I’ll go through the season long markets, and then look at the betting that will be on offer every race weekend.

Season Long Markets

Formula 1 Betting GuideThe main market is which driver will win the Formula One World Championship.  This market is formed pretty much as soon as the previous season finishes, and will stay open all season as long  as the title fight in still ongoing. In the offseason with some drivers changing teams, new drivers coming in, and some going out, this can be a market that moves significantly in the offseason.

Pre-season testing is when the market can move a lot, when there is an indication of how strong some teams are, however not all teams run at full strength, or even with their main drivers, so take a look and draw what conclusions you can.

The most concrete evidence you’ll find is if you wait until the qualifying happens for the Australian Grand Prix, so if you are willing to wait, this will be the first time the teams and drivers will show their full colours, and you will have a much clearer indication of the movers and shakers.

Perhaps you could even wait until a race has been, or several races have been run. There is an advantage to this as the race for the Championship may be much clearer, however it will also be clearer for the book makers, and if a particular driver is dominating, betting may be somewhat limited.

As well as the market for who will win the Championship, you’ll also find the market for the Constructors Championship. Which team will dominate? Which two (or more) drivers do you think will accumulate the most points? This is a market where you’ll want both drivers to pull their weight, so looking for consistency, especially in the teams “second” driver, is one of the keys to this market.

Other season long markets available, will be driver head to heads. Most bookmakers will offer bets on which driver will score the most points within a team, for example, head to head betting between the two Ferrari drivers, or the Red Bull drivers. You’ll also see head to heads between big rival drivers, drivers at the top of the championship, or drivers from the same country. You will also see team head to heads. You think McLaren will outdo Force India? You can place a bet.

The Race Weekend – The Race

The Complete Guide to Betting on F1The majority of betting on the race weekend is the market for the race winner. In most sports, a market will form, and there will be some small changes in the market in the lead up to an event, however in Formula One it will be much more dramatic. The race winner market a week before will look entirely different to the market on the morning of the race.

Each race weekend will have three practice sessions (two on Friday, one on Saturday) and these will have an impact on the race market, drivers either under or over performing, or particularly if a driver crashes, but once again, the teams may or may not show their full ability in these, so draw what conclusions you can from these.

The largest effect on the race winner market will be the qualifying session on Saturday. The driver who qualifies in pole position will have a massive edge, and his odds will shorten accordingly, and a fancied driver who has a poor qualifying session will drift. In Formula One at the end of a qualifiying session you have to be careful, as occasionally drivers will be hit by penalties, which will have an affect on their grid position. These may already be announced, but sometimes these are announced after the qualifying session, so it may pay not to get involved directly after qualifying, and wait an hour or two for any announcements.

At this stage the market will finally be somewhat stable. It is completely up to you when you want to get involved – back a driver at the start of the week, watch practice and qualifying, hope it goes well and see yourself with a nice priced bet on the favourite, or see which team/driver is over performing in the practice sessions, or wait for qualifying to be over before investing your cash.

When waiting to bet until the race day, it pays to bear in mind various factors, for example - which teams have put more focus on qualifying, tire choices of teams, fuel levels, pit stop strategy (with ever changing rules and regulations some of these may be more relevant than others from season to season – so it pays to know exactly the current rules) and most important of all, the weather! A wet race will throw a huge curveball into the “predictability” of some races, so keep a close eye on that forecast.

During the race itself, in-running will be available – and you will be able to bet until the chequered flag is waved.

Just like the season long markets, you will be able to place a bet on which constructor you think will win each race, and also driver head to heads.

If you don’t want to place a bet just on the race winner, you could go for a safer podium finish, obviously much lower odds, but you may fancy an unfancied driver to over perform and sneak onto the podium, and this may be the bet for you on a particular race.

You could also have a bet on a driver to finish in the points. Since 2010, the top ten drivers have scored points, so you’ll receive tiny odds on some of the favourites, but maybe this could be a bet of interest on one the lesser teams drivers.

The other bet you can have is whether or not a driver will be classified? To be classified a driver must have completed 90% of the race distance, so basically you are gambling on whether or not a driver will finish the race – place the bet and hope his car stays in one piece, and doesn’t start smoking!

A popular bet for the race is on which driver will have the fastest lap. As fuel loads decrease as the race goes on, this market will be decided late on, a bet which may keep you interested in a race where the winner market seems done and dusted a long time before.

The Race Weekend - Qualifying

The other main betting market on a race weekend is the qualifying market, specifically, which driver will be on pole position. Currently Formula One qualifying takes place over three mini sessions (Q1, Q2 and Q3), where the slower drivers are cut after each session (in 2013, 22 drivers were cut to 16 after Q1), leaving just ten drivers to fight it out for pole position in Q3.

You can place a bet on qualifying at any time before it takes place, and you can also place during qualifying in-running. This can be advantageous, as there is a natural break between each mini session, so after watching Q1 or Q2, you may have a better idea of who may or may not be on pole.

Some bookmakers will also offer odds on drivers to make Q3 – much like the points finish on the race market, possibly a good bet to have on a more unfancied driver.

Just like the race market, you will have to keep an eye on many factors beforehand, with the practice sessions maybe having slightly more impact on your thought process for qualifiying, than for the race winner market.
