How to Compare Sportsbook Bonuses

How to Compare Sportsbook BonusesWhen you join a new Sportsbook you’ll invariably be offered either an initial deposit bonus or a free bet. These are normally based on the size of your first deposit. Some betting bonuses look more impressive at first sight than others, but when you delve into the terms and conditions you’ll realize that maybe it wasn’t quite as good as you thought... this page outlines the best way to approach comparing sportsbook bonuses - so you'll be sure you are getting a good deal before you jump in.

The first factor considered below is the size of the bonus - both in absolute and in percentage terms. Next you'll find a discussion on the different rollover (pr play-through) requirements and the amount of time you’ll have to clear the bonus. I finish with a look at some hidden requirements and 'terms' you might not necessarily notice in a bonus without digging a little deeper.

Comparing Sportsbook Bonuses on Size

The obvious first thing to compare is the size of the bonus in financial terms. Bonuses will normally come as a percentage of your initial deposit with a maximum amount. For example, you might find a 30% deposit bonus up to $150, meaning that you’ll get $30 for every $100 you deposit. If you deposit $500 you’ll hit the upper limit of $150 in bonus cash in this example. Other offers are 50% or even 100%. Casino and poker bonuses will go above this percentage, though sportsbooks prefer to offer different incentives (no-lose bets and other freebies) instead.

If you plan on depositing a smaller amount where you’ll not reach the upper limit, you should aim for the bonus that gives you the highest percentage amount. Those making bigger deposits might want to aim for the maximum amount, which won’t necessarily be the highest in percentage terms.

If you are offered a free bet, you should realize that the free bet doesn’t actually include the stake and that this makes a big difference. Consider that you place a £50 free bet on an even money shot – without the stake back you’ll receive £50 if it wins and nothing if it loses, making the free bet effectively worth £25.

A good rule of thumb is to consider the free bet as half of the stated amount when comparing this with standard (percentage) bonuses.

Comparing Rollover Requirements

With every bonus there will be a rollover (also known as a play through requirement). This is the number of times that you’ll have to gamble the full amount of both the bonus and the deposit before you can withdraw your profits.

For example, you might deposit $100 and gain a $50 bonus with a 5x play through requirement – meaning you’ll have to gamble $750 ($150 x 5) at the site before the bonus cash is yours. A good rollover will usually be 5 or below, but some sites will require much more play.

A site with a high rollover might offer a bigger bonus, but it might be much harder for you to clear the bonus. As such, if choosing a larger bonus, ensure that is achievable, otherwise you’ll end up with nothing. There are some big differences in the rollover requirements between different sportsbooks, make sure that you understand how many times you'll need to risk your money before you can withdraw before you sign up.

Bonuses With Time Limits

The other big consideration is the amount of time you’ll have to clear the bonus. This will vary from site to site, so as well as the rollover requirement you’ll also have to ensure that you will be able to complete the bonus in time. If you only bet on weekend or Monday night games, then a 2 week time limit might make a bonus a bad deal for you.

By combining the time-limit with the rollover requirement, you'll have an idea of how many bets you need to make each week. If this would require you to up your stake to a point where you are not comfortable with the money risked, then you should look for a different bonus offer instead.

Other Bonus Comparison Considerations

Sportsbetting Bonus Comparison ConsiderationsIf you are gambling at a reputable site, you’ll generally find that you’ll only have to worry about the considerations already explained above. However, some other sites might have additional requirements for the bonus to be met.

One such example is that you’ll only be allowed to bet a certain amount of the bonus in any one wager. This amount might be around 30%. This can be tricky – take the earlier example where you got a $50 bonus with a $100 deposit, needing to gamble $750 to clear the bonus. Here the maximum bet size would be just $15, and a bet of above this amount might mean the bonus is voided, and in extreme cases, any winning amounts are voided.

Similarly, your qualifying bets might need to be above certain odds - preventing you wagering on strong favourites. This will be worded and handled differently depending on whether you are US or Internationally based - though the concept of forcing you to take bigger risks to get the bonus reward is the same.

You might also find that a site will state that bonuses are for ‘wagering purposes only’, meaning that any bonus funds are not actually yours and will be taken from the account at the point of withdrawal – effectively not a bonus at all.

In extreme cases you might find a site where you’ll find no ‘terms and conditions’ at all when choosing a bonus – these sites should be avoided at all costs. It only takes a few minutes to check the Ts & Cs of your bonus, I recommend you do this for every offer you take.
