European's / UK Bettors Guide to Betting on the NFL

The NFL is rapidly growing in popularity in Europe, and with this growth comes more gambling opportunities, so here is a guide to some of those bets you can place, starting with  a quick overview of how the NFL is set up, then the season long markets, and finally delving into individual games.

The NFL Set-Up

NFL Betting GuideThe NFL is divided into two sixteen team conferences, the American Football Conference, for all the American teams, and the National Football Conference, for all the teams based in National (must be somewhere near America..) Within each conference the teams are split up into divisions, four teams in each, based geographically, north, south, east and west. At the end of the regular season, the winners of each of these divisions plus the two best runners up (wild card teams) enter the playoffs, with the winner of the AFC championship game and the NFC Championship game meeting in the Superbowl at the end of January.

Season Long Markets For NFL Bets

Long before the season starts and at any time during the season you will be able to place a bet on the Superbowl winner. In the NFL, every team should theoretically have an equal chance because of the draft system, where the worst team from the previous season gets the first pick of the top collegiate prospects (as opposed to the earlier draught system which didn’t work as well, where the worst team got the best air conditioning unit – didn’t level the teams up hardly at all). This all means that for the Superbowl betting you will find many teams deemed with a chance by the bookmakers, unlike for example European Football leagues, where there may be just two or three teams priced at anything under 100/1. The successful teams from the previous year will obviously feature highly in this market, but the market really takes shape after a couple of weeks of the regular season, when the real action has started.

As well backing the potential Superbowl winner, you can back the winners of each conference, and individual divisional winners,  just four team markets  - a popular bet is a multiple bet picking different divisional winners.

Individual NFL Game Betting Markets

On any NFL game weekend, there are between fourteen and sixteen games taking place, with generally, a game being televised on a Thursday night (Thanksgiving Thursday features three games), the bulk of the games taking place on a Sunday (three of these being televised usually) and one Monday night televised game – the games on TV will have more markets available, but I’ll start with markets that will be available on all games.

The Moneyline is the most straightforward bet in the NFL. Which team will win the game? Place the bet, spend half the game shouting “De-Fence” (not too loudly or your neighbor will think there is a problem with the garden) and hopefully collect your winnings.

Beating the Spread is the most popular bet on the NFL. There are two main types of these bets – firstly the over/under spread bet, which is betting on the total amount of points in the game. The bookmakers come to a conclusion as to what will be a likely figure, and you can bet either under or over this figure. For example, the Saints play the Seahawks and the over/under spread is 47.5 points. This is generally priced up as a fraction, to avoid the possibility of nobody winning (ie the spread being exactly right, and everybody gets their money back, known as a push) but will sometimes be priced as a whole number.

American Football - Super BowlThe second spread bet, is for a team to beat the spread – for example, the Seahawks may be priced at -5.5 against the Saints – what this means is that 5.5 points will be subtracted from the Seahawks score at the end of the game – and you bet on either team on that basis. (You may see it priced up alternatively - Saints +5.5 – it’s the same thing).

Both of the above spread bets will be priced up evenly – usually both sides of the market will be around the 10/11 mark, and you can place these bets both individually, or in multiples involving other games.

All televised games will have many other markets available (some of these may be available on other games as well). As well as the standard spreads, other spreads may be available – for example, in the mentioned game, you might see a spread with the Saints having a 11.5 point start, priced up accordingly (obviously slightly lower). You may also see points spreads for half time, or even for the first quarter.

Non spread bets available will be half-time/full time – simply predict the team winning (or tying) at both, winning margin, where the bookmaker will offer a series of ranges of scores, for example, New Orleans to win by 1-6, 7-12 or more than 12, first team to score and first scoring play (either a Touchdown, Field Goal or Safety).

Individual player markets will also be available – how many yards will the Quarterback throw? How many yards will the running back gain? How many times will the referee say “Holding” to the crowd before realizing he hasn’t turned his Mic on? (not available yet but soon will be).

When the season reaches its climax, and the playoffs start, there will also be many “special” markets on games, and this goes into overdrive on Superbowl week, where some bookmakers may offer upwards of 100 markets, even betting taking place on the ad breaks (the Superbowl ad breaks are an industry in themselves), and the half time show.

With NFL games now being played regularly in London, the growth in the game is immense in Europe, and with rumours of a European based team growing, this will only increase. A great time to get involved.
