Gambling Psychology Part 3 - Knowing the Real Experts

Psychology of Gambling - Knowing the Real ExpertsThe first two parts of this series (part #1 / part #2 )saw a look at how both randomness and losing can affect your gambling decisions. In this part you'll read about how your gambling might be influenced by using information and advice from the wrong sources.

The article starts by detailing a common mistake that many sports bettors make when it comes to columnists and presenters. Next, I take a look at some various ways your gambling can be negatively influenced, this possibly a bigger problem today than ever before. I finish by detailing exactly how you can find the number one expert you should rely on when you are gambling.

Presenters and Writers

A good majority of gamblers will be influenced by either what they read in the newspapers or see on the TV. If that ex-manager (who is earning quite a lot of money from writing a weekly column in a tabloid) says that he thinks a certain team is the likely winner or another team is going through a crisis, then many readers will blindly agree and actually put their money where the columnist's mouth is. The same applies when it comes to TV presenters. If a sporting event is about to start and one of the announcers/commentators suggests an opinion on the game/match/tournament you'll see a whole load of punters dive in.

However, there is a major problem with this. Although these people have a good knowledge of the sport in question, in the vast majority of cases they'll have no expertise whatsoever when it comes to gambling. In fact, simply by visiting this website you are already way ahead of most of these people. One of my pet hates is actually when a sports presenter/writer says that 'xxxx have got to be a good bet to win'. This kind of statement is actually meaningless unless it's backed up with a price. It's like saying 'tomatoes have got to be a good price at the supermarket' without actually stating the price. If an announcer were to say 'xxxx are a good bet as you can get 4/1 and I think they should be 7/2' then maybe you could sit up and listen, but this basically never happens.

Sports stars might be good writers or good for the TV, but don't pay them any heed when it comes to gambling. It's no coincidence that some of the worst gambling horror stories have happened to ex sports stars, where they have squandered their money through a series of terrible bets.

Websites/Forums

Bookies Take a HitIn some ways gamblers are better off in this day and age as there are more resources to find information about any sporting events than ever before. However this can actually work the other way, as not all of the information is actually good or useful. In fact some of it can be the opposite and not help in your gambling at all.

In the current climate there is a rise in tipping sites, where anyone can sign up, post a tip and possibly leave an explanation for the their tip. A very popular site in this respect is OLBG. However when you go to a site like this, you are normally immediately met by a percentage figure of how many people think a certain bet is a good one. There might be a football match on that night and 90% of the people have decided that the heavily favoured home team should be bet on. How much should you heed this advice? You should actually ignore it completely, as it tells you nothing! A quick scan of the comments will tell you why - many people are simply tipping a team because they think they will win and not because they think they are a good price. Yes, there is some good information on these sites, but it really is a case of sorting the wheat from the chaff, as the vast majority of advice on these sites is sadly chaff. Finding one very knowledgeable gambling and sports expert is a million more times valuable than looking at what a random sample of 100 users of these sites might think.

Who is the true Expert?

So how can you find someone who you can rely on? Having read this article you might think that it's actually a really tough job. But in fact it’s quite simple. Stand up and go and find yourself a mirror. When you stare into it, there'll be a person looking back at you, and this is the person you should rely upon. Do your own homework, come up with your own odds, find your own value and place your own bets. It's not easy at first, but the more work you put in the luckier you’ll become. And you'll be way ahead of the crowd.
