The Competitions

The World Cup – Held every four years, this is the biggest of them all. Next held in 2019, twenty teams compete in four pools of five teams, with the top two in each pool making it through to the quarter final. Champions New Zealand are perennial favorites, but only having won it twice in the seven stagings of the competition, the favorites tag can be a burden.

6 nations rugby betting guideThe Six Nations – Held annually in the Northern Hemisphere starting at the end of January, this competition pits France, England, Italy, Scotland, Wales and Ireland in a round robin contest, playing each opponent once. Winners gain two points and a draw is worth one point, with the team with most points winning the championship (points difference is the tie-breaker). Since Italy came into the six nations fold, the championship has been shared around by France, England and Wales, with Ireland winning it just once, Scotland and Italy yet to win the title.

For more on the six nations see this detailed 6-Nations Betting Guide

The Rugby Championship – The Southern Hemisphere’s equivalent of the six nations, a four team tournament contested by New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and Argentina. Each team will play the other home and away, four points for a win, two for a draw, and bonus points awarded for scoring four or more tries or losing by seven or less. New Zealand have won both stagings of the Rugby Championship so far.

The Summer/Autumn Internationals – In the summer, the Northern Hemisphere will travel to play a series of internationals in the Southern Hemisphere and in the Autumn the opposite happens. Although not part of any competition, these are fiercely contested and are seen as pointers to the upcoming World Cup.

The Lions Tour – Every four years, the British and Irish Lions will tour either South Africa, Australia or New Zealand (NZ being next in 2017). These are extremely high profile games, highly anticipated by fans and are one of the highlights of the sporting summer.

The Heineken Cup – The “European Cup” of rugby, top teams from the competing European Nations fight it out over a round robin system followed by knockout quarter-finals. Having only been won by Irish, French or English teams (6 wins each after the 2013 staging) , the competition is going through transition, being doubts over the 2015 staging.

Major Leagues – In the Southern Hemisphere there is Super Rugby contested by Australian, South African and teams from New Zealand. England has its own Premiership, France has its own top 14 league and clubs from Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Italy play in the Pro 12 league.

Others – As well as all of the above, there are other international and domestic cup competitions, domestic leagues below the top leagues and leagues in other nations as well that many bookmakers will price up.

Outright Betting

The Ultimate Rugby Union Betting GuideOn any of the competitions listed above there will be outright betting available. The World Cup you will be able to bet on at any time during the four year cycle, with other major competitions betting being available weeks/months beforehand.

In any outright competition, take a close look at the structure of the competition before placing a bet. Things to bear in mind are :

How might the draw evolve in a cup competition?

Which teams plays more big games at home than others?

Which teams might be taking the tournament a little more seriously than others? (check squads)

Has one team invested heavily in the off season, or has another team had to offload players?

Outright betting will be available both before any competition starts and during it, so there is an opportunity to assess form if you want to wait before placing any bets straight away, but obviously odds will change quickly to reflect form.

Match betting

There are many ways you can bet on any match, and I’ll go through each market.

Match Odds – Simply who will win the match. An advantage in some big Rugby Union matches is that the teams are named well in advance (sometimes a few days) so you can use that information to your advantage – as well as this, use a combination of form, how experienced a team might be and any other factor you deem important to come to a conclusion. One thing to bear in mind is the weather – horrendous conditions can in certain cases be a great leveler.

Winning Margin – How much will a team win by. A bookmaker may offer either team to win by under or over a certain amount of points, for example France to win by more than 12.5 points, or less than 12.5 points. Better odds than the match odds, and a good bet if you feel that a team will either dominate or win a closely contested battle.

First Scoring Play – Which team will score first and how? Will it be a try, a penalty or a drop goal? Good odds, but not a bet you can place with any certainty, a good bet for a quick fix, or if you have to go out after fifteen minutes!

First Team to score a try – Each team will be listed, as well as an option for “no try”. The “no try” bet could be a good one if you think it will be a kickfest, or if you think one team will get off to a fast start.

Time of First Try – In segments of ten minutes, place a bet when you think the ball will cross the line first. Once again, “No try” is an option, and your thought process on this one should be similar to the previous market.

Handicap Betting - Some games (especially in International Rugby) can be very one sided, and the odds very limited, for example New Zealand playing a group game in the World Cup, so to cater for this we have handicap betting. For example USA could play NZ and have a 45.5 point start, so if you think the USA will lose by less than 45.5 points you can back them.

Handicap betting is not just available on particularly one sided games, you could have a game where a team starts as 0.5 point favorite or 3.5 favorite. You might think the underdog will either win, or go down in a tight contest, so this might be the bet to place here.

Half Time/Full Time – Like the match odds, but you have to predict the half time leader as well. Slightly better odds than the match odds if you go for a team to be winning both at HT and FT, large odds available if you think different teams will be winning at HT and FT, very large odds available if you think one half may end in a draw. (Half time betting is also available, who will win the first half?)

First Try Scorer – Which player will score the first try? Look at the line-ups, look at the odds and which player is the most value? Keep an eye on players playing out of position, this could influence your selection. Cheer every time he has the ball in his hands, boo every time he passes it.
