Tricks and Traps to Avoid in Sportsbook BonusesSportsbooks will offer bonuses to entice new customers to a site and to keep existing players on a site. These bonuses can be very attractive and very achievable; however unfortunately there are sites out there who will attempt to restrict these bonus payments. They’ll achieve this by having unrealistic requirements in the terms and conditions of the bonus.

In this article I start by giving advice on reading up on the bonus terms and conditions and then explain how you’ll clear a standard sportsbook bonus. I then move onto look at how the clearing of this bonus can be made more difficult, with five particular examples you might find a sportsbook will employ.

Read the Terms and Conditions of any Bonus

Whenever claiming a sportsbook bonus, you should always check the terms and conditions. Many bonuses have enticing headlines, but the reality of the bonus is not always quite so good. The fact is, if you do sign up to a bonus without checking the T’s and C’s, you really only have yourself to blame. I’ve seen many complaints over the years about perfectly good bonus schemes, simply from people who have failed to understand the requirements.

Standard Bonus Terms and Conditions

In general you’ll find two types of bonuses when joining a sportsbook – a free bet or a bonus amount added to your account. However there is one thing that both these bonuses will normally have attached – a rollover requirement. This rollover requirement is the amount of times the user of a site will have to gamble that deposit and the bonus amount (or free bet amount) before the bonus funds are yours – meaning they are allowed to be withdrawn.

For example – a site might offer a 100% deposit bonus up to £100 with a 5x rollover requirement. This means that having deposited £100, you’ll gain a bonus of £100 and need to gamble £1,000 (£200 x 5) for the bonus funds to be yours. This kind of scheme is entirely reasonable and will be found at many sites – a site without a rollover requirement would see a great many people sign up, take the bonus funds and withdraw the lot – ensuring the sportsbook went broke very quickly. However, while reasonable at most sites, some others will make actually claiming the bonus more difficult.

You should also be aware that free bets are not as quite as good as they sound. For instance, a site may give you a £20 free bet. If backing an even money winner, you would expect to receive £40 back, however these free bets will virtually always NOT include the stake, meaning your return will be just £20.

Tricks and Traps used by Sportsbooks

Tricks and Traps used by SportsbooksUnreasonably large Rollover Requirements

This rollover requirement will vary from site to site but you’ll usually find a good number is 5x or less. However, there is nothing to stop a site from making this number extremely large. A site could make it as high as 50x. This means that in the above example you’d have to gamble £10,000 at the site before the bonus funds are yours.

Short time limits on Bonuses

There will normally be a time limit on a bonus, with the majority of sites giving you between one and three months to meet the rollover requirements.  However, you might find some sites will have an unreasonably short amount of time for you to clear the bonus, meaning it can be very tough – especially if this is in conjunction with a high rollover requirement.

Maximum Bet Size

You might find some sites have a maximum bet size attached to the bonus. This amount will usually be a percentage of your bonus amount – maybe 30%. This means that having claimed a £100 bonus, a bet of more than £30 at any point will void the bonus. There are stories of gamblers who have done particularly well, and have increased their stakes on each bet – when trying to withdraw their huge winnings, the site have used the rule to not only void the bonus winnings, but refuse to pay out at all, offering the player just the initial deposit back.

Minimum Odds for Bonus Clearance

Arbitrage GuideYou’ll generally find that sites will state minimum odds for bonus clearing bets. This is reasonable in many cases, as otherwise players would place bets on many ‘almost certain’ outcomes to claim the bonus money, and the sportsbooks would be at a disadvantage. However, the consequences of bets at these odds or lower might be different at sites. A reputable site will simply not allow these bets to contribute to the bonus clearance. A less reputable site might use a bet at lower than these odds to void the bonus completely, or even void all winnings at the site.

Wagering Purposes Only

Some sites will state that bonuses are for ‘wagering requirements only’ which means that although the funds are added to your account, you’ll not be able to withdraw the amount – the bonus amount deducted at point of withdrawal. In this situation, these are not actually bonus funds at all.
