Why you are Limited by Online BookMakers

Danger Signs Online GamblingBookmakers don’t like players who regularly win. This is because it is the gambling companies who ‘should’ be making the money and not the customers of the sites – so if someone is a regular winner they’ll be having a negative impact on the profitability of the site. To counter this, regular winners might find that their bet size is restricted, in some cases to ridiculously small stakes – this being known as ‘gubbing’ within the industry.

In this article I start by looking at the history of gubbing and how it is easier for the bookmakers today, before explaining why it makes sense for the sites to do it and I question whether it is acceptable. I move on to look at some of the ways you can actually protect yourself from this practice even if you are a winning gambler. I finish with an overview.

The History of Gubbing

BookMakers have a long tradition of gubbing winning gamblers. The early days of gambling which saw bet taking being done as a one man operation would simply see the layer refuse to take bets from someone who repeatedly won. This practice became more difficult when high street bookmakers evolved in the 1960’s as shrewd gamblers would move from shop to shop to stop themselves being ‘noticed’ and many large gambles were landed by placing a huge series of smaller bets at many different shops. However, as online gambling has evolved, it has gone full circle, as it is now easier than it has ever been before to spot regular winners – it’s simply a case of checking a user’s account and if they are winning, limit them! In many cases this requires no human intervention at all, as software will be monitoring accounts and if an account hits one of the ‘flags’ that signifies a winning punter, the account will be automatically restricted.

Is Gubbing Acceptable?

Although very frustrating as a gambler, it does make complete sense from a bookmaker’s point of view. If you were running a shop you’d set your prices to ensure that you’ll make an overall profit on each transaction and if someone asked if they could pay less than this amount, you’d simply say no. A bookmaker who is taking bets from a regular winner is doing virtually the same thing, and limiting the user so that he/she moves to another bookmaker makes for a good business model.

However, some would argue that a bookmaker actually makes enough money from losing customers to deal with the odd winning customer – some bookmakers actually adhere to this, as limiting players can give them a bad press.

Whether right or wrong, it does take place – fortunately there are ways to protect you a little from the practice.

Protecting yourself from Gubbing

Protecting yourself from Gubbing1.       Use several bookmaking sites. Placing all of your bets at one site will lead you to being limited if successful on a regular basis. If you have one account which is in profit and another which is making a loss and you are offered the same price on an event at both, choose the losing account to place your bet. If you are indeed successful and have smaller winning accounts at a number of sites, as opposed to a large winning account at one site, you are less likely to be limited. (Using many sites has many additional advantages – particularly in this era of large welcome bonuses, where you can pick up a lot of free money).

2.       If a site has a casino or a poker site alongside the sports betting site, visit these areas and gamble a small amount. This might mean that you are more likely to be labelled as a ‘recreational’ punter and be of more value to the site. Other ways that might help you create an image of a losing gambler is to place the odd large selection accumulator or the odd Lucky 15. These are usually bad bets, so keep the bet sizes small!

3.       Make use of the betting exchanges for those big bets. When gambling at an exchange you won’t be limited at all and in many cases the prices offered will either match or better the prices you’ll receive at a bookmaker.

4.       Don’t get too hung up on obvious ‘arbs’, especially those you see highlighted on forums or elsewhere online. Regularly picking up on these ‘no lose’ situations will raise many alarms, and these small wins might mean you’ll be limited when wanting to place a ‘real’ bet.

5.       If you see an obvious pricing error – don’t jump on it. Bookmakers who make mistakes in their pricing are protected by a ‘palpable error’ rule, so you’ll not win any money in these situations anyway – but it is a sure way to get yourself noticed as a ‘shrewd’ gambler.

Why you are limited by Online BookMakers – Overview

Whether you agree with gubbing or not, this practice does go on and the situation will not change as long as there are clever punters who have an edge. Use some of the suggestions above to avoid yourself being detected and you are more likely to be a long term winner – being a smart punter is about more than just picking winners.
